CATRINA
Catrina is a set of 4 ceramic wall sculptures with black brushwork over matte, multi-color skin in blue, terracotta, purple, yellow and red. The set of four, painterly sugar skull masks are my take on the skeleton of Catrina and the gorgeous palette of Latin American culture. Variable dimensions depending on hanging style. each piece is 8.5 inches high.
These stylized face masks are representative of the Dia de los Muertos festival celebrating traditional Mexican folk culture. Initially part of Aztec culture, Day of the Dead celebrates the departed where skulls are a good luck symbol. The bold and classic stylized form expresses the powerful nature of the character of Catrina.
