MUFF
I designed and made Muff, a ceramic wall sculpture with a rough green and black glazed surface. The rectangular shape has a split running vertically and a sea sponge inserted at the top of the split. An abstract stylized vulva, perfect for a feminist female birthday gift. 10 x 7 inches.
I made this as part of an exhibition related to the harrowing ordeal suffered by Eliza Fraser. She was shipwrecked off the Great Barrier Reef on the east coast of Australia in 1836. Pregnant at the time, Eliza and her husband Captain Fraser took to the life boats and drifted for 3 weeks. She gave birth to a baby boy in front of the sailors. The wee babe died and was buried at sea. The sculpture represents the passage of the baby through the birth canal to its new watery medium in the ocean.
The perfect artwork to give as a life marker on graduation. Or hang it a symbolic representation of the female.
