RED BUDDHA
A hand modelled work of art, Red Buddha has two parts. The main sculptural surface has tones of ruby berry red through to a rusty claret color where the glaze has pooled. The five petal flower form is embossed with daisies. The lower part has a serene baby Buddha head and small brass bell attached below the red daisy. The Buddha head is a blood red. 6 x 8 inches.
The Nepalese inspired mixed media sculpture is a reminder of the round stupas, intricate carving and Buddha statues that are a part of life in the Himalayas. I trekked with friends to the Annapurna base camp in Nepal. The tiny votive shrines can be seen along each trekking path with offerings of food and incense. I savoured the ritual of turning each prayer wheel as you circle the temple shrines. The sculpture is an abstraction and reflection of the beauty of the crimson red rhododendron forests and the offerings to the Buddhist deities.
