MARIAM
This modern sculptural form is a ceramic head on a timber plinth. The surface has a stucco finish with impressed symbols on the lower half hidden within black and white stripes. The 3D female face in rectangular box form is inspired by the geometric style of sub-Saharan architecture and African textile patterns. The obverse side has a mysterious, hand modelled key hole. A distinctly unorthodox artwork and the perfect gift for the art lover looking for something different. 13 inches high.
I am attracted to the simple asceticism of the architect Mariam Kamara of Niger. She is able to find the essential nature within a building. Her reductive design blends geometric abstraction with classic African adobe structures. The artwork is a combination of natural ochres and linear stripes found on her buildings. The female face has kohl eye make-up and luscious red lips. The two facets of this sculpture makes it interesting to view from any angle.
The classic shape gives symmetry and proportion to a neutral space. This sculpture will be a great talking point in your living room or office space as part of your modern art collection. Transform your home today with this contemporary bohemian sculpture.
