ELIZA
Eliza is a female figure giving birth. The ceramic sculpture has a gray white, matte glaze with a blue baby showing. The art work is based on the story of Eliza Fraser who gave birth to a baby on a lifeboat. The woman has strong boat shaped legs. The birthing woman sculpture stands 7 inches high.
Eliza is named after the wife of a sea captain from the 1830s. They were sailing to Indonesia from Sydney Australia, and were ship wrecked on the Great Barrier Reef. Eliza gave birth to a baby boy in the lifeboat in front of the sailing crew and her husband. Helpless, Eliza was the only woman onboard, The tiny baby died soon after and was buried at sea.
This sculpture was part of a larger exhibition about Eliza Fraser's story. They came ashore on what is now known as Fraser Island. The local aboriginal people killed her husband and several crew. Eliza was stripped naked and lived with them for several months. A search party sent from Brisbane eventually found her. She returned to England and married again to a another sea captain.
A talking point and focus of attention in your well considered interior. One of a kind. And the perfect gift for a doula or midwife. Eliza is a unique figurine and can be displayed on your bedside, bookshelf, coffee table or mantelpiece. Her finely modelled features will be enjoyed for years to come
