LAUGHING BUDDHA
This white and gold ceramic sculpture is a Laughing Buddha. He holds two auspicious objects, a bottle gourd and a bowl of plenty. He wears meditation beads and sits on a swirling plinth symbolizing ascension into the heavens. 14 inches high.
Are you looking for an artwork that is unique and has a higher meaning? I made this sculpture after working as an artist-in-residence in Jingdezhen, China.
I sculpted this Laughing Buddha based on the Chinese deity, Maitreya. A symbol of tolerance, kindness, wisdom and humour, he embodies why it is important to smile, stay happy and enjoy life. The plump, jolly and pot-bellied Maitreya, was a travelling monk who sought enlightenment through renunciation of daily pleasure. Instead he collected people's sadness and woes and resolved differences between warring parties.
The Laughing Buddha wears mala prayer beads or 'pearls of wisdom'. He carries a bottle gourd which symbolizes blessings and good health. And he holds his begging bowl or RuYi to symbolize the receiving of good fortune. The auspicious objects are covered in Dutch gold leaf.
Place him facing your main entrance to attract good luck. Or put in your office to reduce work tensions and give focus to tasks. Remember to rub his stomach on his birthday, the 8th of May, to bring energy, wealth and joy to your future.
