BABA
Raw and refined meet in this hand made mummy figure bound in cotton thread and bespoke wooden beads. The figurine called Baba, has a primitive fired clay finish on his stylized body. 8 inches high.
Baba is wrapped in two types of cord, a rough binding cotton and an ecru crochet thread. I hand cut some timber beads for the statue using gum tree sticks from my garden. Perfect for a collector of contemporary nomadic and tribal art. Hang him on the wall as a unique 3D element in your decor.
Baba means man or guy and is an ancient word used by the Zulu of South Africa. His design has a lot of inspiration from around the world. When I made him I was thinking of mummified animals from pre-history. He's also a bit like fetish dolls made in Cameroon in the 1970s. Their naive sculptures were made with found fabric threads over a bronze armature .
The ceramic figure and primitive dress makes him ideal for an eclectic boho interior. Or add him to your tribal collection. Baba will add character and texture to a neutral space. The figurine has a woven loop behind so you can hang on the wall. He also looks compelling standing on books or can lie on your coffee table or bedside. The sculptural figurine stands about 8 inches/20 cm high and has a powerful presence.
Baba is a unique, one of a kind artwork and is ready for a new home today. A great gift for a well travelled person.
